Mastering the Ultimate Crossover: How G.I. Joe and Transformers Will Unite
Balancing a crossover event is no easy feat, and the recent collaboration between G.I. Joe and Transformers is proving to be no exception. In 2023, fans were thrilled when the post-credits scene of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts teased the G.I. Joe team’s involvement. Now, as excitement builds around the upcoming Transformers One film, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura opened up to Collider about the challenges that come with merging these two iconic universes.
During a Q&A following an IMAX 3D screening, di Bonaventura admitted to Collider’s Editor-in-Chief Steve Weintraub that balancing the sheer number of characters in the Transformers universe is already a challenge—and adding G.I. Joe into the mix only amplifies the difficulty. According to the producer, trying to manage too many characters dilutes the quality of each one, which is something they’re working hard to avoid in this ambitious crossover.
“It’s a process of finding a story and then adjusting it,” di Bonaventura explained. “Sometimes it doesn’t work, and you have to figure out why. The idea of a ‘crossover’ makes me a little nervous, because the expectation is that it should be 50/50. I don’t think that’s going to work. If we try to split it evenly between Transformers and G.I. Joe, it’s going to feel off-balance. Maybe we’ll end up with a third Transformers, a third G.I. Joe, and a third human characters. But that balance will have to find itself naturally.”
Fans can expect plenty of action from both the Transformers and G.I. Joe teams, with a carefully crafted story that won’t overwhelm audiences with too many characters—allowing each franchise to shine in its own right.
